hilarious… I got here searching for #1

“product managers are idiots”

I’ve been in the software industry for 15 years, worked for 8 different companies and I’ve only worked with ONE product manager in my entire career (20+ product managers) who actually had a handle on what product management was all about. And she took the time to research and understand the business landscape, what our competitors were doing and what we needed to do LONG-TERM (and short) to shore up our position in the market.

Sorry folks, product managers are not popular with me. It’s one of the most important positions in any company developing and selling a product. Yet companies consistently put the wrong people in that position.

I hate you all :-)

(I’m using the word “hate” here very loosely – tongue-in-cheek; relax)

I just found your blog yesterday and I think you are right on in your postings. The thing is, I still want to be a Product (NOT Project) Manager at a tech company. I guess that makes me strange indeed.
For those that searched "new product manager what to do first", I say that until you understand what this job is about, don't take it on.

So CPM, that's a pretty good list. However, it sure looks like a lot of those searches are by non-product managers trying to get more information. If the searches were being done by working product managers, I would have expected to see things more along the lines of:

1. Save me I'm drowning
2. How to get more respect than the QA folks
3. Why is everyone else getting promoted, but not me.

and my personal favorite...

4. All of the responsibility and all of the blame.
