This is brief, because it hurts to type. True physical pain.
The Cranky PM has H1N1 – 0r as one reader termed it, “porkulosis”. No doubt, it is some kind of cosmic retribution for her executing a near flawless product launch earlier this week, and then bragging about it on Twitter.
Unfortunately, this means that the Cranky Product Manager will be unable to speak at Business of Software 2009.
She is SO sorry and very, very disappointed. She had her wig and sunglasses all set to go, and had been working on her presentation for weeks. (Maybe she’ll record it as a webinar some day, so that the effort does not go to waste). She was really looking forward to attending the conference and learning at the feet of gurus like Geoffrey Moore (her hero) and Joel Spolsky.
Damn you, swine flu!
In the Cranky PM’s stead, @NeilDavidson, the fearless organizer of Business of Software 2009 will be doing a talk on the “weird pyschology of software pricing.” Very interesting topic, and it is sure to be a great presentation.
Anyway, the Cranky PM is super-duper sorry. She feels like she really let you down. She hopes to try again next year at Business of Software 2010 in Boston.

This is a bummer. Truly a bummer. Granted, the “I’m cranky as hell but I’m not going to tell you who I am thing” both annoyed and intrigued me, but I’m still disappointed. And, I know you’ll say I’m too cynical, and though I do, I DO believe you, part of me still feels like I’m being cheated and that you’re wimping out. No, don’t hate me for saying so, I’m sure I’m just saying what others are thinking. But, if you want a silver lining, think of it this way: I was really looking forward to hearing and seeing this mysterious cantankerous personality.
I hope you feel better as soon as possible.
Oh, that really is unfortunate. I hope you get better. I hope I don’t get the flu before I fly to San Francisco on Sunday! I was really looking forward to your talk and your possible inclusion of some of my anecdotes. I think it would make a great webinar… you should totally do that. Hell, if you live in the Midwest I’ll come film it for you.
Thanks, Chris. And kinda thanks, Andrew.
Andrew, as far as the “wimping out” statement, the CPM sez ‘don’t judge until you catch this H1N1 mother-f@#$ yourself.’ I’ve not felt this sick in at least a decade. Plus I’m caring for the Cranky Kid, who also has this disease, is in a high-risk group (and not just cuz he/she is under the age of 5), and has fevers spiking around 106 degrees. And like any sick kid, s/he wants to be glued to his/her mommy 24/7.
Get well soon, CPM! They say this naughty pig stuff is not sooooo terrible after all, just like the regular flu variety. Take care. We devoted readers out here wish you all the best.
Crikey! I hope you feel better soon. I had hamthrax a month or so ago, and I have never been so thoroughly knocked flat by an illness. The worst parts stopped after a couple of days, but for a week more I was still needing a couple of naps a day. I can’t imagine dealing with disease plus a sick kid; you’re a champ.
Like Chris, I’d love to make sure the talk gets out; if you’re in the SF area on some future date, I’m sure I can borrow some gear from a videographer pal.
My only reason for attending BoS2009 was to find out the true identity of the CPM….
Now I have to wait another year…
Get well soon Contagious Pigflu Maiden
.. KJ
I am so sorry. Get well soon.
Pesky porcine flu pestilence bug thing!
if it’s any consolation, I had the worst (and I mean WORST) flu-ey bug thing last winter. Laid me low for all of December and a chunk of January.
Never mind the swine flu bug, avoid the Creaky BA’s version instead – truly awful; I missed my birthday, Christmas AND New Year, bah ang humbug on a grand scale!
Get well soon,
The CBA.
(Why “creaky”? Oh hell, mid-40s, not as lithe and supple as I used to be….you all can work out the rest I’m sure!)
I hope you get better soon, and I can relate to the baby being sick; that is even worse, as we know we have to continue to take care of the babies no matter what we feel like. I have two and they are more important than anything in the world – anything. This just means that you have your priorities in order for the long haul. Take care of the little one and yourself, and darling husband. I really hope you feel better soon, and never mind the “wimping out,” comment. For anyone that is a Mom, at least, and has had sick little ones, there is nothing worse than seeing your little ones suffer, while being helpless to do more than offer the constant Tylenol, Ibuprofen and hugs and kisses. Do what you have to do; you are doing the right thing – the most important thing, and I salute you.
That really does suck, CPM. I hope you and your cranky kid get feeling better quickly. I think having the cranky kid sick at the same time goes beyond cosmic karma into cosmic bad jokes.
CrankyPM, we missed you here at BOS 2009. Was looking forward to finally seeing you in person.
Get well soon.
Webinar! Yeaah, please let us take part in your deepest insight, dear CPM. I did not go to the conference to disclose your disguise, but I would have loved to hear what you think about your talk’s topics.
Please record a webinar and let the world take part in your wisdom. You would truly make my day and improve my own little product mgmt world.
Get well soon and take care!
I re-read this and I was being an ass, in my earlier reply, sorry. I have those moments, more often than I’d like. Once I though it was because of being an engineering type but lately I think its just personality deformities, unrelated to those incurred as part of being an engineering type.
Anyway, it would have been awesome to see you present, hopefully another time or digitally, and I do honestly hope you get better soon.
