A BIG thank you to the organizers of the 5th annual Silicon Valley PCamp.  As usual, it was wicked awesome.  650 Product Managers in one place!  Wow!

The Cranky Product Manager was very impressed by the quality of the presentations, as well as the organization of the event. Well done, everyone. The organizers did an absolutely tremendous job.  And to think that we get to attend for free!  It’s amazing.

Except for one thing (and it is absolutely no fault of the organizers):

Ballot Stuffing.

The Cranky Product Manager (and no doubt your mother, who TRIED to raise you right) has one simple request for you:

==> If you are NOT planning to attend our PCamp, don’t vote on the sessions! EVEN if a vendor bribes you with free stuff in exchange for your vote.

If you participated in this votes-in-exchange-for-free-crap scheme, SHAME ON YOU.

You screwed up the room assignments and screwed over your fellow product managers.

Sparsely attended sessions, that nonetheless fraudulently garnered a lot of votes, were assigned to the biggest rooms.  More popular topics were assigned to tiny rooms that ended up overflowing with people and unable to accomodate everyone who wanted to attend.

And a note to the vendor(s): Why are you even doing this?  The Cranky Product Manager doesn’t get it.  It does not make you look good.  If no one wants to attend your sessions based on their own merits, why tilt the playing field in attempt to put the session on? Instead, why not take the untampered-with voting as market feedback on your offerings, and next time propose more compelling sessions?

Book Review: The Product Manager’s Desk Reference

by The Cranky Product Manager on March 2, 2009

in Reviews & Plugs

OK, here is a long overdue review on The Product Manager’s Desk Reference by Stephen Haines.

Quick Summary

This 704 page tome is huge and not exactly a thrilling read.  The Cranky Product Manager highly doubts there is a bidding war on for the movie rights.  But nonetheless it is an excellent reference that  has something for everyone, from the novice product manager to the VP of Products with 20 years of product experience.

It covers the entire spectrum of product management activities, and provides excellent ideas, approaches, and ways of thinking for each activity.  Over a 3-month period, the CPM found herself reaching for this book often — more than any other book in her product management library.  The Cranky Product Manager strongly recommends The Product Manager’s Desk Reference.

Caveats and Mild Criticisms: This book is industry neutral, and thus applies to industries ranging from software to financial products to automobiles.  As such, coverage of software-specific topics (working with Agile development teams, Beta testing, …)  was limited or non-existent.  It is also biased toward large companies with lots of resources, management layers, and processes, although there is good stuff in here for startup PMs too — ESPECIALLY THE STUFF ON PRODUCT STRATEGY.

To make this book a bit more exciting and to help the information “stick”, the book might have benefited from examples and case studies.  But maybe the author will follow up with this in a future book (?).

Advice:
Get the Kindle version (if you have a Kindle , that is). In the Cranky Product Manager’s mind, this book is the perfect application for a Kindle.   As a PM, you might very well want access to this book’s valuable content while on the road, but your arms will snap off if you have to carry it through an airport (although it might come in handy as a weapon).

More Detailed Review

Seems like The Product Manager’s Desk Reference contains pretty much everything the author knows about product management – and he knows a LOT – all in one 704-page book. It is the most comprehensive tome book on product management that the Cranky Product Manager has ever encountered.

At first, the Cranky Product Manager tried to read this book cover-to-cover.  Two months later, she gave up.  She then tested the book by using it as a REFERENCE for the tasks she was doing at work – to get new ideas, make sure she was covering all the bases, etc.  And SHOCKINGLY the book worked much better as a reference than as a novel.

(You’d think the Cranky PM would have realized this months earlier given the book’s title, but no one ever accused the CPM of being WICKED SMAAHHT or anything.)

The Product Manager’s Desk Reference gave great ideas and advice for the following activities that the Cranky PM did between November ’08 and February ’09:

  1. Win-Loss analysis – OK coverage.
  2. Product strategy - This is the meat of the book, spanning several chapters, so the coverage is excellent.  The PMDR  is probably the best resource for product strategy and product portfolio strategy out there.
  3. Competitive analysis – Excellent coverage (chapter 7)
  4. Product requirements - Excellent coverage (chapter 13)
  5. Market segmentation, targeting and positioning - Excellent coverage. Chapter 8 covers it in detail.
  6. Forecasting - Excellent coverage – probably the best discussion of forecasting for product managers out there.  Chapter 9 is all about this.
  7. Working with teams that use agile development methodologies – no coverage
  8. Using social networking technologies to improve product management – no coverage
  9. Product Evaluation guides – no coverage
  10. Beta testing - some coverage, but more of the “you should have a Beta test” variety without any specifics.

One Funny Dude

by The Cranky Product Manager on February 24, 2009

in Reviews & Plugs

If you follow the Cranky Product Manager on Twitter, you probably know that she adores onthefringe, a “VC-backed, start-up CEO, sharing day-to-day insights in the day-to-day life of a start-up.”  He(?)/she(?) often shares “advice” for product managers.

Funny stuff.

And NOT the Cranky Product Manager is included in this camp (given that she’s married and all that), but she knows several people who would TOTALLY Twitter-make-out with onthefringe if given the opportunity.  That’s how funny he/she is.

Check it out.

The Cranky Product Manager stumbled on the Business of Software’s Social Network (on Ning).  So far, looks to be a high-quality forum with lots of great discussion on product management topics.  Current discussion topics include:

  • What App/System do you use to write Feature Specs? 2 Replies

What a jackass the Cranky Product Manager is.  Before she knew that he would “violently” disagree with her (shame on him!), the Cranky Product manager promised Saeed of the excellent  On Product Management blog that she would post about his blog’s nomination for an uber-prestigious Canadian Blog Award in the category Best Professional/Career Blog.  But alas, the Cranky Product Manager did not act right away. She waited, thinking Thursday would be a good day for said post.

And so Thursday, today, arrives, and just as the CPM was revving up and writing a glorious call-to-action to help the On Product Management crew reap their just rewards, she discovers that “voting round 1″ is now over, and alas Saeed/Alan/Ethan did not advance to round 2.

F$&*.  The Cranky Product Manager feels partially responsible for this utter travesty of justice.  If only she got off her lazy ass and wrote a post earlier. Maybe it would have helped. What a turd she is.

Alas, the Cranky Product Manager flaked and broke her word. There’s no decent way to make up for this, but the CPM is going to try.  Here goes….

If you haven’t checked out On Product Management do so now. Below are some of the Cranky Product Manager’s favorite posts, most of which give their unique take on the reality of Agile product development. Unlike most others writing on Agile, these guys don’t just drone on with the Agile party line. Instead they make though-provoking observations and arguments that you have not read anywhere else. Examples:

  • Annoyed by newly Agile-ized developers who act like they invented the concept of getting customer feedback?  Check out Is Product Management Agile?
  • Why Agile/Scrum is not a panacea, and commentary on the ironic inflexibility of some agile proponents: Agile/Scrum Reality Check.  (Was going to say “rigidity” instead of “inflexibility”, but kept snickering like Butt-head.)
  • Agile/Scrum and Product Management – Parts 1, 2, 3, 3a, and 4. (whew! lots of reading, but worth it).
  • Also, check out the hilarious Uninterruptible Power Supply Saga (don’t forget to read the comments): part 1, part 2, part 3, and part 4.

Plugs Ahoy

by The Cranky Product Manager on November 16, 2007

in Reviews & Plugs

No bitchiness here today.  The Cranky Product Manager finally got a good night’s sleep.  At last, after many months, CrankyKid 1.0 slept through the night. And there was much rejoicing.

Anyway, in lieu of a tirade against some marketing nimrod or self-important code boy, today the Cranky Product Manager is going to plug the following sites:

First,  the new PM Jobs email list. This email alias for Product Management and Product Marketing job postings only launched two weeks ago. But wow! They have a ton of listings already. Over 115 job postings and 800 list members.  Membership and posting are free. Since perusing the listings of several sexy-sounding jobs, the Cranky PM’s perpetually wandering eye has mutated into fervent new job lust. Check it out at http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/pm_jobs/.

Second, It’s that time of year.  Take Pragmatic Marketing’s Annual Product Management and Marketing Survey before November 21. The CPM cannot WAIT until the results are published.  She’ll use them to demand her boss give her a monster raise.

Steve Johnson for President

by The Cranky Product Manager on August 11, 2007

in Reviews & Plugs

If you’ve never seen Steve Johnson of Pragmatic Marketing speak, then you are truly missing out. Seriously, the Cranky Product Manager kids you not. He is one frakin’ hilarious dude. Very, very funny while oh-so-in-touch with the inane nature of real-world product management. The Cranky Product Manager once saw him speak, and afterward – no lie – she had to switch out her jeans for a less damp pair.

So, the call to arms. Go vote for Steve. Make him one of the speakers for the awesomely magnificent Business of Software conference.

After Steve wins this select-a-speaker contest, which he undoubtedly will thanks to all of you, beg the powers-that-be for some budget, and go hear his talk.

You will not be disappointed, the Cranky PM assures you.

Just remember to bring an extra change of clothes.
